England manager Roy Hodgson’s decision not to vote for Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi in the Ballon d'Or ballot has been met with surprise.
Instead, he selected Javier Mascherano, Philipp Lahm and Neuer as his one-two-three.
The only other person to vote for Mascherano as their top pick was Belarus manager Andrei Zygmantovich.
The decision to omit the Ronaldo and Messi – widely regarded as two of the greatest players of all time - from his vote drew consternation from pundits and fans alike.
While Lineker's pointed out the obvious, talkSPORT's Stan Collymore made a more pertinent point regarding the insight the actual vote provided.
Others indicated that the vote was slightly contradictory considering Hodgson's previous dealings with Mascherano.
Some on Twitter elected to mock the selection.
Ronaldo coasted to victory with 37.66 per cent of the vote – a total which topped the combined hauls of fellow nominees Messi (15.76%) and Bayern Munich stopper Manuel Neuer (15.72%).
