Smith, 44, was the fourth longest-serving manager in the top four divisions after spending nearly five years at Walsall, but replaced interim boss Lee Carsley on Monday to become Brentford's new head coach.
"A few weeks ago we were asked to describe the Brentford philosophy in a few words. The words that immediately came to mind were 'we take risks'", Giles said in a statement on the club's official website.
"Not reckless gambles mind you, but calculated decisions for which the possible implications have been considered.
"It's a philosophy which comes right from the top of the club and has served (club owner) Matthew Benham very well in his other businesses.
"The reason for this is simple: we cannot outspend our rivals so therefore we have to find different and innovative ways of doing things. However, you can't say 'take risks, but don't fail' and at the same time expect to move forward."
Giles said it had been a gamble to appoint Dutchman Marinus Dijkhuizen in the summer following the departure of Mark Warburton to Rangers, but Carsley had been a "safe choice".
Carsley had made it clear he did not want the job on a permanent basis, while replacement Smith had signed a 12-month rolling contract at Walsall only last month after they had rejected an approach from Rotherham.
"In Dean Smith we believe we've appointed the right person for the job...we believe he is the perfect fit for Brentford," Giles added.
"Rest assured that our plan is based on the traditional Brentford qualities of team work, commitment, exciting attacking football - and taking a risk or two."
