Brighton boss Chris Hughton upbeat ahead of meeting with former club Newcastle

The Seagulls host the team who just edged them to last season's Championship title, and who sacked Hughton as manager in December 2010, while pursuing their second victory of the Premier League campaign after what has been a challenging start.

Bournemouth's victory over Hughton's side last Friday was their first in the league of 2017/18 and was one they followed on Tuesday in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

With fixtures against Arsenal and Everton to follow Sunday's clash with Newcastle, Hughton knows Brighton need to recover.

"The key is going to be responding to them (disappointing results)," the 58-year-old told reporters. "Putting them in the past and focusing on the next games and also trying to be happy with the majority of what you're seeing both in games and training.

"We recognised at the start of the season it would be a tougher season.

"The players' mindsets have been very good and so has the training and what we need to do is put as much of that into practice on the main arena and the next opportunity is against Newcastle."

Hughton has been boosted by captain Bruno, Glenn Murray, Izzy Brown and Gaetan Bong all returning to contention for the meeting with his former team, whose fine start to the season has not surprised him.

"Recruitment is not just about one window, Newcastle recruited really well last season and some of the players doing particularly well for them at the moment are ones that were bought last season," he said.

"They've got lots of qualities and different ways of winning games. So not surprised, it's a tough division and you have to find different ways of winning."
