Fourth seed Adrian Mannarino was sent crashing out of the St Petersburg Open by British qualifier Liam Broady.
Frenchman Mannarino, ranked 211 places higher than his opponent, looked on course for the quarter-finals when he won the first set 6-2 and broke early in the second.
But Broady, whose first-round victory over Latvian Ernests Gulbis was his first ever win in the main draw of an ATP World Tour tournament, broke straight back.
The 23-year-old then conceded just one more game as he recorded a memorable 2-6 6-4 6-0 success.
Broady will face Bosnian Damir Dzumhur, who beat Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-4 7-6 (7/4), in the last eight.
At the Moselle Open in Metz, home favourite Nicolas Mahut beat Germany's Dustin Brown 6-1 7-6 (7/4).
However, three other Frenchmen - Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Gilles Simon - tumbled out to Mischa Zverev, Henri Laaksonen and Peter Gojowczyk respectively.
