Brown praises defensive display

The Shrimpers were thrashed 4-1 at Wycombe Wanderers last weekend.

And Brown was delighted to see his side respond by getting a clean sheet against the high-flying Brewers.

"I'm very pleased because Burton are a good side and we've defended well against them," said the former Hull City boss.

"Last weekend it hurt me seeing us concede four goals like that at Wycombe and this was for more like it.

"We showed more resolve, good character and discipline and I was delighted with how we defended to be honest.

"Going forward we didn't have the cutting edge we need to win and maybe the chances we created dropped to the wrong people.

"Myles Weston is short of confidence at the moment but in the end it was a good point for both teams and it wasn't for the want of trying that we didn't get the win."

Neither side managed to register a single shot on target during a dismal first half but Shrimpers winger Kevan Hurst did go close with an early effort which curled just wide of the right post from 20 yards.

At the start of the second half, fit again Southend left-back Ben Coker had a 25 yard free-kick pushed to safety by Burton goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

In reply, Brewers striker Stuart Beavon shot straight at Southend goalkeeper Daniel Bentley following an error from the shaky looking Cian Bolger.

Beavon then had another effort, from a well worked corner, smothered by Bentley before his opposite number McLaughlin tipped over Barry Corr's header from a Hurst free-kick.

The draw meant Burton, who beat Southend in the play-offs last season, stayed in second and missed out on the chance of taking over at the top of the League Two table.

But Burton boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink felt a draw was a fair result.

"This is difficult place to come but we stood firm, worked hard and got a deserved 0-0 draw in the end," said Hasselbaink.

"They had a few little chances and so did we but it's a fair result in the end.

"We knew coming here we would be tested physically and mentally.

"They had a bad result last week at Wycombe which was out of character for them because they don't normally concede many goals.

"We looked a good unit but we know we can play better and show more quality, especially when going forward ourselves.

"But it's not a bad result and now we can look forward to our next game with Tranmere."
