Bayern Munich edge Borussia Dortmund with dramatic late penalty

A dramatic late Arjen Robben penalty gave Bayern Munich a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund,

Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller both impressed for Bayern, both bringing excellent saves from Roman Weidenfeller, saving a number of shots from Robben cutting in from the right, and one on one against Muller.

But Dortmund were not cowed. They started brightly too, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan sending a rasping effort just wide, and Aubameyang bringing a save from Manuel Neuer as he approach goal.

It was Marco Reus who opened the scoring, glancing an excellent header to the far post after an Aubameyang cross.

Mats Hummels did not make it out for the second half, and was replaced by Neven Subotic. Dortmund managed to hold on against Bayern pressure until Robert Lewandowski lashed in a brilliant shot as a ball fell to him 20 yards out.

With five minutes left, Subotic dragged Franck Ribery to the ground to concede a penalty that Robben calmly dispatched.

5’ - ROBBEN EFFORT - Robben goes close. Robben plays a one-two with Muller into the box and blasts a left-foot shot at goal that Weidenfeller punches over the bar.

9’ - MKHITARYAN SHOT - Kagawa flicks a ball to Mkhitaryan, who was steaming through down the left and across into the centre of the box. He then thunders a shot just wide of goal, Neuer rooted to the spot.

30’ - NEUER SAVE - Neuer pulls off a good stop to save his side in a one-on-one against Aubameyang.

31’ - GOAL! Bayern Munich 0-1 Dortmund. Reus scores - Aubameyang sprints down the right into space after being released by Kagawa, and curls in a fantastic header at the back post, glanced into the far corner.

38’ - WEIDENFELLER SAVE - Robben measures a perfect ball forward for Muller, but his shot is blocked by Weidenfeller, who had stood up as long as he could.

39’ - ROBBEN MISS - What a miss from Robben. He has time and space, turns on to his right, puts a defender on the floor, turns onto his left, and then blasts a shot at goal that's deflected wide from six yards.

51’ - ANOTHER WEIDENFELLER SAVE - Benatia sends in a cross for Lewandowski, who is in acres of space, and he volleys at goal from 10 yards only for Weidenfeller to block the shot with his feet.

59 - KAGAWA MISS - Kagawa receives the ball on the edge of the box, spins towards goal and then fires his shot wide.

64’ - BENATIA HEADER - Benatia strives to get to the back post, and glaces a header just a yard wide.

72’ - GOAL! Bayern Munich 1-1 Dortmund. Lewandowski scores - Ribery measures a pass for Robben's run into the box, but it's intercepted and runs to Lewandowski. The striker lashes a curling, low shot into the corner for a brilliant equaliser.

84 - PENALTY! And yellow for Subotic. Subotic drags down Ribery in the box after he runs in the box and the referee doesn't hesitate.

85’ - GOAL! Bayern 2-1 Dortmund. Robben scores - He takes a few strides and sends a shot into the left corner, as Weidenfeller dives in the opposite direction.

This was Bayern’s first home victory over Dortmund in the Bundesliga since 2010.

Dortmund have just seven points on the board, their worst record in 29 years.

Dortmund’s goal was the first Bayern conceded in the first half this season in the Bundesliga.

German football matches its economic situation: For all that’s talked about Germany’s economic success, it was built on exploiting the Euro at the expense of other, less financially established European economies. Similarly, Bayern have succeeded by stockpiling talent that has been developed elsewhere and using their financial advantage. There is little edifying about the country or its most successful club and the damage it does around it.

Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich): Though he only played the last quarter of the match, it was Ribery who changed the course of the match, exploiting his pace and direct running to make the most of Dortmund’s lack of focus after spending so much effort on concentrating to protect their lead.
