Mario Goetze scored one and made one as Bayern Munich won at newly-promoted Cologne to go four points clear of Mainz at the top of the Bundesliga.
Goetze scored the opener with a tap-in at the far post after Arjen Robben and Thomas Mueller combined to create the opening.
Koln rarely threatened the Bayern goal but came agonisingly close to scoring when Manuel Neuer pulled off a superb double save, first from Adam Matuschyk and then from Anthony Ujar on the rebound.
Cologne were made to regret that miss when Bayern effectively ended the contest midway through the second half when Robben played in Goetze, whose cross was turned into his own net from Daniel Halfar under pressure from David Alaba.
KEY MOMENTS
5' PENALTY APPEAL! Typical mazy run by Robben, who appears to be tripped in the box as he's about to shoot.
19' GOAL! Cologne 0-1 Bayern Munich: Cologne fail to clear from their own corner flag and it falls to Robben, who finds Mueller, who prods it across the six yard area for Goetze to stroke in from close range.
30' MASSIVE double chance for Cologne! A perfect low cross finds Matuschyk two yards out but he cannot beat Neuer, who then smothers the follow-up fro Ujah for a stunning double save. Cologne MUST score there.
66' GOAL! Cologne 0-2 Bayern Munich: Robben's pass finds Goetze, whose cross is turned into his own net by Halfar, under pressure from Alaba.
70' BAYERN CHANCE! Very nice effort by Alonso, who joins the attack late and goes for a low curler from 25 yards, but it's palmed around his post by Horn.
KEY STATS
Bayern enjoyed 78% possession in the match
Goetze had a hand in 5 of the last 8 Bayern Munich Bundesliga goals.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Mario Goetze (Bayern Munich) - A goal and an assist for a player whose confidence has been on an upward trajectory ever since that World Cup winning goal in July. Goetze looks a better player when Ribery is not in the team.
