Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke claims Marco Reus could have earned “twice as much” at “some of the biggest clubs in the world” before signing a new contract.

The Germany international’s decision to commit his future to a team struggling against relegation was a huge surprise, given persistent links with the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
And even Dortmund’s own CEO appears to have been taken aback by the club’s success in managing to tie Reus, 25, down to a new contract which runs until 2019.
Dortmund were also successful in removing Reus’ €25 million release clause.
"Reus' renewal is a crazy story. It really is remarkable. He could have earned twice as much elsewhere," Watzke told Bild.
"On one hand you have some of the biggest clubs in the world chasing you and then there's the relegation battle with Dortmund - and no Champions League football next season.
"But he is committed to Dortmund. It would have been very difficult for Marco to leave the city and club. That was decisive in the end. He really is a special guy."
