Tuchel, who took charge of Mainz a year after Klopp left the club to join Dortmund in 2008, has been out of work for a season having taken a break from the game.
He remains under contract with Mainz until the end of June, from which moment he will become the new head coach of Dortmund.
A Dortmund statement read: "The eight-time German champions Borussia Dortmund have appointed Thomas Tuchel as their new coach from July 1, 2015. The 41-year-old will receive a three-year contract."
THE VIEW FROM GERMANY
Fabian Kunze (Eurosport Germany): At the moment it is hard to say whether this is a good appointment or not. Of course, Tuchel is a football maniac, a tactic nerd and a manager who combines passion and tactical nous when coaching. But he only has Mainz 05 on his CV - yes, the same club from which Juergen Klopp once came to Dortmund, but times have changed. When Klopp took over Borussia they were down, nobody really expected anything of the team or the coach. Now Dortmund have been Bayern Munich’s main competitor for some years, and played regularly in the Champions League, everybody expects them to come back and fight for titles next year. It is going to be difficult for a coach without international experience to bear all this pressure - and it’s certainly a risk for Dortmund to have chosen Tuchel.
