Thomas Muller marked his 200th Bundesliga game with a brace as Bayern Munich beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 at the Allianz Arena.
Arjen Robben grabbed the home side’s third goal from the penalty spot, despite Muller being on a hat-trick, as the reigning champions maintained their 100 per cent start to the season.
Muller scored a trademark opening goal after stabbing the ball in from close range after a cross from the electric Douglas Costa.
Brazilian Costa came agonisingly close to doubling the home side’s lead with a strike which struck the bar, while Leverkusen also rattled the woodwork with a stunning free-kick from 35 yards by Hakan Calhanoglu.
In the second half, Pep Guardiola’s side were awarded a controversial penalty when Arturo Vidal was pushed and Muller dispatched the spot kick to make it 2-0.
And Bayern benefited from another soft penalty when Roberto Hilbert was penalised for handball after appearing to block Costa’s cross with his shoulder.
Robben stepped up and tucked in the penalty to make it three wins out of three for the Bavarians.
KEY MOMENTS
12' – THIAGO SHOT: Robben lays the ball to Thiago on the edge of the box but the Spaniard's first-time effort goes over the bar.
25’ – KIESSLING EFFORT: Mehmedi sends in a pinpoint cross from the left and Kiessling's glancing header drifts just over the bar.
26’ - GOAL! Bayern Munich 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen. Muller grabs his fourth goal of the season. Alonso's long ball finds Costa who sends in a good cross for the German to stab the ball home from close range.
30’ – WOODWORK! Costa hits the bar with an acrobatic effort from a tight angle from a brilliant run and cross from Robben.
36’ – CALHANOGLU FREE-KICK! Vidal concedes a silly free-kick 35 yards from goal with a trademark crunching challenge. Calhanoglu's set piece rattles the woodwork, what a strike!
49’ – KIESSLING MISS! Kiessling is through on goal, his first shot is parried and his header on the rebound is cleared off the line by Alaba.
55’ – LEWANDOWSKI CHANCE: Leno races off his line to slide in and clear Robben's low cross, the ball hits Lewandowski and goes agonisingly wide of the goal.
60’ - GOAL! Bayern Munich 2-0 Bayer Leverkusen. Muller scores with the penalty after sending the ball straight down the middle.
71’ - GOAL! Bayern Munich 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen. Despite the fact that Muller is on a hat-trick, he lets Robben take it and the winger calmly sends his spot-kick into the left corner and send the keeper the wrong way.
74’ – LEWANDOWSKI CHANCE: Lewandowski's shot is saved by the advancing Leno from a tight angle, he should have passed as Robben was there with an empty goal to aim at.
KEY STATS
Thomas Muller has netted 76 times in 200 Bundesliga games.
Douglas Costa has four assists already this season.
TALKING POINT
Were Bayern fortunate with the two penalty decisions? The decision to award the spot kick for a push on Arturo Vidal was extremely harsh as those sort of challenges are routine in penalty boxes. The second penalty for a handball against Roberto Hilbert for blocking Douglas Costa’s cross was also controversial given that the ball appeared to hit his shoulder. Roger Schmidt’s side will be fuming at their bad luck.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich): The German underlined his class in front of goal by breaking the deadlock with a good finish from close range before stroking home a penalty. The reported target for Manchester United unselfishly allowed Arjen Robben to take the second penalty despite being on a hat-trick.
