Bayern Munich maintained their perfect record at the start of the Bundesliga season, beating Schalke 2-0 thanks to late strikes from Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich.
Lewandowski scored an opening day hat-trick in Bayern’s 6-0 demolition of Werder Bremen and was at it again as he latched onto Javi Martinez’s fine pass to finish with aplomb.
And Kimmich, on as a second half sub for debutant Renato Sanches, settled matters with his first senior goal for the club from Lewandowski’s assist as Bayern hit Schalke on a swift counter.
Markus Weinzierl made five changes from the Frankfurt loss and his side arguably had the better of the match up to that point, Klaas Jan Huntelaar having a shot blocked on the line before clattering the crossbar from distance.
Yet Bayern are nothing if clinical and victory means they are unbeaten in their last 12 encounters against Schalke and have an early jump on the opposition at the top of the table.

TALKING POINT

Better things around the corner for Schalke. It’s a match they probably didn’t deserve to lose and a vast improvement from the Frankfurt performance. Two lapses did for them but they certainly look a top four outfit despite two opening defeats.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich): Schalke’s back four and the impressive Baba laid great claims but a clinical goal and excellent assist proves that Lewandowski is worth his weight in gold.
