Andre Schurrle came off the bench to fire Wolfsburg closer to the Champions League last 16 courtesy of a 2-0 win at CSKA Moscow that eliminates the Russian side from the competition.
The former Chelsea star broke the deadlock past the hour with a shot from a tight angle that squirmed in via the arm of hapless goalkeeper, Igor Akinfeev.
Schurrle's effort had appeared to have been going wide but there was no doubt about the second strike two minutes from the end as he swept home Sebastian Jung's cutback from the right.
The hosts knew they had to avoid defeat to keep their hopes of progressing from the group alive, but they played with a great deal of caution and didn't get going until the second half.
The turning point in a dour affair came when Zoran Tosic's curling effort from the edge of the box cannoned back off the post with the scoreline still goalless.
If that had gone in it could have been a different story for the home side who then saw Akinfeev destroy his own hopes of a first Champions League shut-out since November 2006 with his error.
The result moves Wolfsburg to the top of Group B with nine points. They face Manchester United at home on Matchday Six but the Red Devils know a victory against PSV Eindhoven later would see them qualify for the knockout stage with a game to spare.

KEY MOMENTS

62' - OFF THE POST! A wonderful move sees Tosic arrive on the edge of the box following a lovely back heel from Dzagoev, but his first-time effort cannons back off the post with Benaglio beaten.
67' - GOAL! CSKA 0-1 Wolfsburg. Former Chelsea forward, Schurrle races in from the right and squeezes a shot beyond the hapless Akinfeev after Dost had touched on a long ball over the top.

85' - CSKA MOSCOW CHANCE! What a big opportunity. A ball over the top finds Musa who looks to be clean through, but he can't quite get it out of his feet and a last-ditch challenge denies him the strike at goal.
88' - GOAL! CSKA 0-2 Wolfsburg. Schurrle doubles his tally and seals the win. Jung cuts it back from the right for the ex-Chelsea man who flashes a first-time drive into the corner.
90+1' - WOLFSBURG CHANCE! Bendtner almost rubs salt in the wounds with a low drive that bounces off the outside of the post.

KEY STATS

Andre Schurrle becomes the fifth player from Germany to score a Champions League goal for three different sides.
Igor Akinfeev has not kept a clean sheet in the Champins League in 36 matches (since November 2006).

TALKING POINT

Akinfeev's blunder. A poor match was slowly coming to life with a CSKA side lacking confidence growing into the game. The hosts looked the more likely as the second half wore on but after hitting the post, the goalkeeper contrived to make a terrible mistake that deflated their hopes and ultimately saw them bow out at the Group Stage of the Champions League for the third time in succession.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Andre Schurrle (Wolfsburg): The Germany international made an almost instant impact off the bench with the effort that led to the error from Akinfeev. The forward added energy and belief to the Wolves' frontline and sealed the win with a clinical finish.
