A poll in Spanish newspaper Marca asked supporters who they wanted to replace the suspended Marcelo for the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid.
And rather than plumping for back-up Fabio Coentrao, who got 37.4% of the votes, just over 50% said they wanted to see Bale move into defence.
The Wales international started his career as a full-back at Southampton and began life at Tottenham there too, before maturing into one of the most devastating attackers in world football.
Earlier in the season Madrid fans also voted in a poll saying they wanted Bale to be moved out of the attack, rather than Cristiano Ronaldo or Karim Benzema.
But Carlo Ancelotti is likely to resist public opinion again and stick with Bale in his front line.
