Manchester United may need at least a point in their final match at Wolfsburg after being held to a 0-0 draw at home to PSV Eindhoven.
United dominated possession but only created two chances of any note, Anthony Martial foiled by the leg of Jeroen Zoet in the first half before Jesse Lingard blazed over a glorious chance in the second.
Louis van Gaal rang the changes in the second half, bringing on Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young for Bastian Schweinsteiger and Memphis Depay.
But the changes had precious little effect on a United side sadly lacking in inspiration and tempo on the tenth anniversary of the great George Best’s death.
The result means that Wolfsburg leapfrog United to the top of the table after their earlier win against CSKA Moscow. And with Van Gaal’s men travelling to Wolfsburg, they will need a much better showing if they are to progress.

KEY MOMENTS

37’ – CHANCE MARTIAL! Lingard’s shot is deflected into his path. He’s in on goal but Zoet saves well with an outstretched right boot.
74’ – BIG CHANCE UNITED! Blind finds Young and his cross falls perfectly to Lingard only a few yards out but he hits it over the bar. Should have scored.

KEY STATS

PSV have drawn their first away game against United having lost their previous two away games: a 1-0 defeat in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup and 3-1 in the 2000/01 Champions League.
There has still never been an away win in the five previous encounters between Manchester Utd and PSV Eindhoven.
Manchester Utd have now failed to score only twice in their last 20 Champions League outings at Old Trafford, the previous against Cluj in December 2012 (0-1).

TALKING POINT

Where was the passion? Where was the desire? Tonight, of all nights, United needed to invoke the spirit of George Best when victory would have seen them through. The crowd was fully behind them but they looked deflated, short of inspiration and leggy towards the end. Tough to explain.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Davy Propper (PSV): A highly efficient performance that showed a spirit and willingness lacking in the opposing side's midfield. A couple of shots that kept De Gea on his toes.
