Paul Scholes: Anthony Martial 'doesn't look bothered if he scores or not'

The disappointing result at Old Trafford means that United need to win away at Wolfsburg in their final match to be sure of reaching the last-16 of the competition.

Scholes renewed his criticism of manager Louis van Gaal’s style after the match, but also made a pointed comment about Martial, 19, who joined the club from Monaco in the summer in a deal which could be worth as much as £58 million.

Martial scored four goals in his first for matches for United but only has one in 11 since then, and Scholes says the club should consider going out and buying a proper centre-forward.

“Attacking wise they don’t look a threat, they don’t look good enough, they don’t look like they’re going to go and score goals,” said Scholes.

“Martial for me, he’s still got a lot to prove goalscoring wise. He isn’t a centre-forward like you two [Michael Owen and Gary Lineker] were, who live for goals. He’s a player who likes to come outside the box and drift to the left wing.

“He doesn’t look bothered if he misses a chance. He doesn’t look bothered if he scores a goal. As a centre-forward, all you live for is scoring goals.

“All you want to do is score goals, and he doesn’t look that type of player to me, and maybe they need to go into the transfer market in January for one of them.”
