Real Madrid will meet neighbours Atletico in the 2016 Champions League final after Zinedine Zidane's side eased to a 1-0 victory against a lacklustre Manchester City at the Bernabeu.
A deflected strike from Gareth Bale, officially credited as a Fernando own goal by UEFA, was enough to put an end to Manuel Pellegrini's hopes of taking the Citizens to their first European final since 1970 in his last term in charge.
In truth, they never looked likely to cause an upset in the Spanish capital. After a cagey stalemate in the first leg, the visitors saw their hopes seriously hampered when captain Vincent Kompany's injury curse struck again after just nine minutes. The Belgian was replaced by Eliaquim Mangala and from that moment Real bossed the proceedings.
The hosts took the lead via the fortunate deflection off Bale's cross-shot on 20 minutes and should have doubled their advantage on more than one occasion, but Cristiano Ronaldo and co were thwarted by an inspired Joe Hart.
An away goal for City would have sent them through but they couldn't take advantage of several reprieves, with their insipid attacking performance personified by Yaya Toure, who cut a disinterested figure during his hour on the pitch.
Pellegrini and his charges must now turn their attention to a crunch Premier League clash at home to Arsenal on Sunday as they look to ensure Champions League qualification for Pep Guardiola next season.
Real are still in with a chance of winning La Liga and could yet end the campaign with an 11th European Cup title when they lock horns with their local rivals in the San Siro on May 28.

TALKING POINT. City's lack of cutting edge.

The Citizens never really looked like scoring across the two legs. Even after Joe Hart produced a series of fine saves to keep them in it at 1-0, they struggled to build any momentum late on. An away goal would have taken them through, but aside from a long-range effort from Sergio Aguero and a first-half drive from Fernandinho they struggled to get within 30 yards of Keylor Navas's area. The work-rate of Yaya Toure will come under scrutiny, as will Pellegrini's tactics, which were far too conservative in the second half. Real cruised throughout and deservedly booked their place in the final.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Luka Modric (Real Madrid). Majestic at the heart of the midfield. Dictated the rhythm alongside Toni Kroos and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet when he was denied by Hart.

KEY MOMENTS

9' - KOMPANY INJURY BLOW! Big problems for City as their captain is forced off with what looks like a thigh problem after playing a simple pass in the middle of the park. The Belgian is replaced by Mangala.
20' - GOAL! REAL MADRID 1-0 MAN CITY ( Real lead 1-0 on aggregate). Carvajal slips a simple ball into Bale on the right of the area and the Wales forward does the rest, flashing a right-foot shot into the top corner via a big deflection off Fernando.

53' - REAL MADRID CHANCE! Hart pulls off a great one-on-one save from Modric after the Croatian had sprung the offside trap to collect Bale's clipped pass into the middle. It should be two.
65' - WOODWORK! Bale thumps a header against the crossbar from Kroos's left-wing corner. Real keep up the pressure but Ronaldo is flagged offside as he bundles it home with his arms in true slam dunk style!
89' - MAN CITY CHANCE! Aguero lets rip with a 25-yard drive that flashes just over the top. City almost sneaked into the final.
