The Portuguese giants urged their fellow Champions League competitors to back their initiative and donate one euro per ticket sold for the first two rounds of the tournament – allowing each club to gather gate receipts at one match.
In a letter to UEFA president Michel Platini, the club said it was “impossible to close our eyes to the drama of the migrants and refugees that are trying to enter in the European soil.”
They signed off with the line: “Let’s play for the migrants!”
Porto will kick-start the campaign in their match against Chelsea on September 29.
Such an initiative could raise in excess of one million euros if backed by all 32 clubs.
