Lewandowski stunner gives Bayern Munich win over Atletico Madrid

Robert Lewandowski's first-half free-kick proved enough to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Allianz Arena and end the Spanish side's hopes of finishing their Champions League Group D campaign with six straight victories.

Both teams were already secure of qualification through to the knockout stages, with Atletico guaranteed top spot and therefore seeding in Monday's draw.

It was Bayern, though, who exacted revenge for their defeat at the Estadio Vicente Calderon back in September when in-form Lewandowski - who had hit 23 goals in as many appearances for club and country this season - curled a 22-yard free-kick into the top right-hand corner after 28 minutes which proved enough for victory.

Both sides had made the expected changes.

Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal came back into the starting XI for Bayern, as did 19-year-old Portugal international Renato Sanches while Philipp Lahm waited on the bench for a record-equalling 102nd appearance in the Champions League.

Belgian Yannick Carrasco led the attack alongside Antoine Griezmann for the visitors.

Bayern had won their last 14 home Champions League matches, but were almost behind in the ninth minute on what was a foggy evening when Carrasco's low drive was deflected away by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The hosts slowly regained momentum as Douglas Costa's angled shot was blocked and then Arjen Robben's follow-up cross hacked out of a packed six-yard box before Vidal scuffed a shot wide as he failed to make a decent connection from 12 yards out.

On 28 minutes, Bayern swept into the lead with a superb free-kick from Lewandowski.

Carrasco fouled Juan Bernat just outside the Madrid penalty area on the right.

Poland forward Lewandowski needed no second invitation as he clipped the free-kick up over the wall and into the top corner past the dive of goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Atletico struggled to regroup as Bayern remained on the offensive during the closing stages of the first half with a goal-bound effort from Sanches blocked.

Bayern continued to press following the restart as Robben's breakaway shot was deflected behind before Costa's effort following a corner was straight at the keeper.

At the other end Atletico substitute Angel Correa sent an angled drive just wide.

Madrid coach Diego Simeone had used all three of his substitutes during the closing stages, but the injection of fresh legs failed to find an equaliser.

Thiago could have put the result beyond doubt with 13 minutes to go, but the Spanish midfielder shot over from close range after Costa's ball in.
