Marco Reus scored in the dying minutes as Borussia Dortmund came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Real Madrid and finish top of the group.
A clinical Karim Benzema appeared to clinch top spot for Real after his two goals put the current European champions in cruise control.
However, Real will now have to settle for second after letting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Reus steal in for a point, while Dortmund also scored their 21st goal of the group stage in the process, a record in the competition's current format.
The result means Real join Bayern Munich as possible opponents for Arsenal and Leicester after both English sides topped their respective groups.
Elsewhere in the group, Legia Warsaw beat Sporting 1-0 to leapfrog them into third and claim a spot in the Europa League after Christmas.

TALKING POINT

Real stumble to 34 unbeaten. In Zinedine Zidane’s 50th match in charge of Real, Los Blancos made it 34 games unbeaten with this draw. This equals a club record, but the hosts will be in no mood to celebrate after they let a two-goal lead slip. Real were careless in defence and let Dortmund back into the game all too easily, while Cristiano Ronaldo had a night to forget, hitting the post with a sitter before losing the ball while attempting a pirouette. He gestured for the crowd to calm down after he made amends by putting in a strong tackle, but the soon-to-be Ballon d’Or winner will certainly be disappointed with his tally of two goals in the group campaign.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Karim Benzema (Real Madrid): On another night, we’d be talking about Benzema’s match-winning performance, but he was let down by his side after coming off to rapturous applause in the 87th minute. The Frenchman did miss a sitter in the second half, but he headed Real into a 2-0 lead just seconds later. That’s how you make amends...

KEY MOMENTS

28’ - 1-0 to Real! Benzema with the goal Carvajal is in acres of space out on the right, takes his time before finding Benzema six yards out with only Weidenfeller to beat, and he taps in for Real's opener. Wasn't the cleanest of finishes but Benzema will not care!
44’ - CLOSE! A better ball and Dortmund would be level. It's out wide with Castro and he tries to find Aubameyang in the middle, but the ball in is a yard ahead of the forward, who would have had the goal at his mercy. CLOSER! Down the other end, almost a carbon copy of Dortmund's chance, but this time Ronaldo is even closer to connecting with Benzema's cross. Inches away!
53’ - GOALLL!! Benzema grabs his second! Real 2-0 Dortmund Just about to lambast Benzema for missing a sitter from eight yards out after shooting straight at Weidenfeller... Moments later, Rodriguez whips in a delightful ball and Benzema is there to make amends and head in for his second.

60’ - GOAL DORTMUND! Aubameyang gets one back... Real 2-1 Dortmund Real are calling for offside as a ball over the top from Weigl finds Schmelzer. The linesman rightfully keeps his flag down and the Dortmund player plays it across to Aubameyang, who taps it into the Real net. Game on!
79’ - OFF THE POST! It's not Ronaldo's night... Vazquez eases through a couple of players before crossing it into Ronaldo, who takes a touch before placing it beyond Weidenfeller. It's not accurate enough however and hits the outside of the post.
88’ - Reus equalises for Dortmund!! Real 2-2 Dortmund Blistering counter from Dortmund after Marcelo fails to cross it in down the other end. Aubameyang has it out wide and his ball across the box finds Reus who smashes home the equaliser. As it stands, Dortmund will finish top, and that goal by the way, is their 21st in the group stage, a record in this Champions League format.
