Neymar and Edinson Cavani rampant as PSG crush Celtic

Neymar and Edinson Cavani were in irrepressible form as PSG thrashed Celtic 7-1 in a humiliating defeat for Brendan Rodgers' side at the Parc des Princes.

Celtic went ahead after just 57 seconds when Mousa Dembele flicked in a near shot at the post, and shocked the home side with the first goal they conceded in the group stage.

A point would have guaranteed a spot in the Europa League for Celtic, but Neymar quickly equalised, sent the home side ahead, before Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe scored to make it four before half time.

In the second half, PSG were happy to control the game but added a fifth through Marco Verratti towards the end of the match, and Cavani and Dani Alves made it six, then seven.

PSG will have to wait to confirm their place at the top of the table, but their goal difference lead looks insurmountable, while Celtic also face a wait over their third place finish.

PSG are Manchester City's biggest rival at this stage. With Mbappe, Cavani and Neymar, there is no team in Europe with a better attack. They might not have the strongest defence, but with the sheer skill of their forward line, supported by midfield, they appear to be City's most credible opponent for the Champions League title.

Neymar (PSG): Mbappe and Cavani both impressed, but the creativity, invention and confidence of Neymar helped his side quickly get back into the game and going behind, and was a constant threat from the left with his ability. PSG must protect him from criticism and make sure that he does not feel the same ennui that forced him away from Barcelona.

22' - GOAL! PSG 2-1 Cetic. Neymar scores - Neymar has his second. After patient build-up play from PSG, Neymar exchanges quick passes with Rabiot, then Verratti, and works his way into the left of the box. Again. he beats Gordon with a low shot across his body.

29' - GOAL! PSG 3-1 Celtic. Cavani scores - It's game over. Verratti has the ball 30 yards from goal. He sends in a cross for Mbappe and Neymar, but the ball breaks for Cavani, who stabs home from a couple of yards.

35' - GOAL! PSG 4-1 Celtic. Mbappe scores - Another goal as the PSG frontline complete the set. Marquinhos receives a cross, marked by absolutely everyone. He shifts the ball to Mbappe, 12 yards out, and his second touch is to strike a ball to the top left.

75' - GOAL! PSG 5-1 Celtic. Verratti scores - Mbappe engages his legs and sprints past Tierney to the touchline. He pulls the ball back, it ricochets towards Verratti, and he drills his shot past Gordon.

79' - GOAL! PSG 6-1 Celtic. Cavani scores - Di Maria sprints down the left wing, floats a cross to the back post, and Cavani lashes in a volley.

80' - GOAL! PSG 7-1 Celtic. Alves scores - Cavani takes an air shot in the box, the ball bobbles about in the box until it comes out to Alves, who slices a shot into the top far corner. A brilliant effort.
