A 2-0 defeat to Millwall ended the Cobblers' five-match unbeaten run - albeit that was from Sky Bet League Two games - as goals from Aiden O'Brien and Lewis Gregory sent the hosts through.
Wilder subsequently let rip about the necessity of the Football League Trophy, saying: "Can I be controversial? Sack the competition, sack it.
"It's an opportunity to get to Wembley, I suppose but that's so far down the line - I'm not a lover of the competition. I think we play enough football, we've got the League Cup, we've got the FA Cup.
"I want to win every game. It's the first time I've said this really but something's got to happen to spice it up a little bit.
"The biggest thing for football is the participation of supporters. If they don't fancy it, why do the clubs fancy it?"
Millwall boss Neil Harris reserved his praise for Wolves loanee George Saville, who was thrown straight into the starting line-up.
Harris said: "I thought he was outstanding. He's not played a lot of football, he's been training for three days.
"He gave us a bit of aggressiveness in middle of the park. I was really pleased. That's the standard he's set and he's got to keep to that."
