Christian Heidel to replace Horst Heldt as Schalke director of sport next season

Heidel will arrive after 24 years in a similar position with Mainz and will take the place of Horst Heldt, whose contract will not be renewed when it expires in June.

"We are convinced that Christian Heidel is the right man for Schalke with his undeniable sporting competence and experience, his proven leadership qualities and his positive charisma," said Schalke president Clemens Tonnies, who announced Heidel's appointment after a board meeting on Sunday.

Heidel was in Gelsenkirchen to present his vision to the board members before they took a vote on his appointment.

In a statement published on the Bundesliga club's website, it was confirmed that Heldt would remain in his position until the end of his contract and be responsible for building a squad for next season.
