Chris Wilder admitted Northampton had to work hard before emerging with a 4-0 win at Leyton Orient to record their seventh successive Sky Bet League Two win.
Rod McDonald and Ricky Holmes put the Cobblers on a path to victory before James Collins' brace confirmed their away triumph.
"We had to endure a little bit of pressure in the first half which was scrappy but being top of the league, we are there to be shot at and we understand that," said Wilder.
"I didn't think that we played very well in the first half though but sometimes you need a little bit of magic to get you going and I thought that as soon as Rod (McDonald) produced the goal, we were comfortable.
"We ended comfortable winners and looked like a side who really believed in themselves and drove the game forward.
"It's been a great afternoon for us and I have to say that if any clubs that are in or around the promotion places have to come to Orient, then it's going to be a tough afternoon for them."
Orient player-manager Kevin Nolan was full of praise for Northampton.
He admitted the Cobblers had handed his side a footballing lesson, saying: "I thought Northampton were fantastic and they showed us what it takes if you are wanting to get out of this division.
"They've come here, they've been efficient and been brilliant in what they've done and we were not good enough, it's as simple as that.
"We matched them in the first half but you have to give credit to Northampton because they contained us.
"They made us look ordinary in the second half and we needed to match them for the 90 minutes and we haven't done that.
"You could see in the second half just what a good team Chris Wilder has built.
"In the second half, they didn't let us out, they won every second ball, they won every header and we have to learn from that if you want to win games.
"Some of their finishing was fantastic and we found it difficult to match that.
"Our boys can see what they have to achieve if they want to hit the heights and try to get out of this league."
