Racing Lens knocked out Nancy 9-8 on penalties in an action-packed French Cup first-round tie.
Lens, second in Ligue 1, had Tunisia forward Issam Jemaa sent off early in the second half.
The visitors were then 3-2 down with a few seconds left in normal time of a game played in driving rain when teenage striker Kevin Monnet-Paquet equalised.
No goals were scored in extra-time and Lens clinched the shootout through Mali defender Adama Coulibaly (pictured) after goalkeeper Sebastien Chabbert had saved from Nancy's Pascal Berenguer.
Sochaux won 3-1 at St Etienne in the other all-Ligue 1 tie.
St Etienne, 2-0 down at halftime, reduced the arrears through Czech midfielder Marek Heinz with eight minutes left and were pushing for an equaliser when forward Anthony Le Tallec sealed Sochaux's win two minutes into added time.
Olympique Marseille, who have lifted the trophy a record 10 times, needed three goals from France striker Djibril Cisse including two in extra-time to defeat amateurs Cambrai 4-1.
Fourth division Calais, finalists in 2000, reached the round of 32 by ousting Ligue 1 Lorient 2-0 with two goals from forward Djezon Boutoille.
Ligue 1 Stade Rennes conceded two goals in extra-time to bow out 3-1 to third division Romorantin while Toulouse needed penalties to defeat third division Chatellerault.
