Darren Fletcher relishing chance to lead Scotland at Wembley

The 32-year-old regained the captaincy from Scott Brown when the Celtic midfielder decided to retire in August, although he has since reversed that decision and is in the squad and certain to start against the Three Lions.

Fletcher revealed his pride when asked what it would mean to him to take the Scots out for their crucial 2018 World Cup qualifier against the Auld Enemy as they look to get their qualification campaign back on track after taking just four points from three games.

He said: "It will mean a lot. Every time you represent your country and lead your country out it is massive. There is no bigger place to do it as a Scotsman, to walk out at Wembley in front of 90,000 fans and 10 team-mates behind you, desperate to get a result and create a bit of history.

"It is a monumental moment and one I am looking forward to and excited about and relishing it.

"We are not going in here with fear or on a real low.

"We get disappointed after results, but it gives you a bit of steel and determination to go out there and try to put it right.

"It is an occasion I am going to try to enjoy. I am sure there will be many more than 14,000 fellow Scotsmen cheering us on and it will be a great occasion and hopefully we can get the result we can remember it by."

Fletcher is enthused by Brown's decision to come out of his short retirement in Scotland's hour of need.

He said: "It is fantastic. Broony is a great character, well liked in the squad.

"It was a smooth transition back in, no problems at all and he is a player who is in great form and has made himself available again which is brilliant.

"Him and the manager have a great relationship and he has obviously missed playing for Scotland as well and it is good to have him back. He would be an addition to any team."

While patriotic Fletcher will be going all out for a Scotland win, he heaped praise on former Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney, who will captain the Three Lions.

He said: "He is a first-class captain, a leader, always has been.

"He is a natural-born leader, leads by his example, leads by his voice and is not afraid to speak his mind.

"As for his standing in the game, he is England's all-time leading goal-scorer and it doesn't get much bigger than that.

"He is going to break Manchester United all-time leading goal-scorer record and he has won everything there is to win in the game.

"He is a world-class player and slightly under a little bit of pressure just now, but he will be first to accept that challenge and prove people wrong."
