WEDNESDAY MORNING’S BIG STORIES

1 – ‘I’m not a football expert’

FA chief executive Martin Glenn sparked consternation when he admitted he was “not a football expert”. It’s not the most alarming news, until you realise he’s fronting a three-man panel to pick the next England boss. Oh wow. FA technical director Dan Ashworth and vice-chairman David Gill are the other men tasked with finding Roy Hodgson’s successor.
The man they'll pick, at least for now, appears very likely to be Gareth Southgate.
"We'll see," he said, when asked about Southgate. "We'd like to get [a permanent] one for the first World Cup qualifier, but if we won't we have an interim plan in mind.
"We are not talking about names today, but it would be a pretty obvious one to pick."
In fairness to Glenn, he was merely pointing out that having never played or coached professionally he was not a regular in dressing rooms. But in the rarefied environment of England football immediately post-calamity he ought to have known his words would be seized on.
"We're going to harness opinion and wisdom from the wider part of the game," he added. "We need to have a wider consultation of the game. It's really important we get this right.
"We are going to be canvassing opinion from former managers, current managers, clubs and players to make sure we get a lot of wisdom. We want to move to a new approach, get a new management team, and it's our commitment to say in future tournaments in every game, every match, every half we will punch our weight, go to tournaments as contenders and get over this brittleness."
In other words, they'll dither for months and end up picking someone "clubbable" instead of just the best candidate. Or else Southgate's triumph in near-meaningless qualifying games will earn him the job on a full-time basis.
Good luck, England...

2-Hazard sits out Belgium training with thigh problem

Just as Belgium fans were getting giddy about the prospect of winning Euro 2016, an injury cloud gathered over talisman and captain Eden Hazard. The Chelsea winger scored in the 4-0 demolition of Hungary but picked up a thing injury in the first half and was eventually substituted.
"That's why I took him off," coach Marc Wilmots told journalists. "I think he'll be back the day after tomorrow. He's working with the physios and he should be 100 per cent on Thursday."
Belgium face Wales in the quarter-finals on Friday.

3-Wales defend ‘England exit’ celebration video

Chris Gunter has refused to show remorse after the Wales squad celebrated England’s exit at Euro 2016. The jubilant scenes were caught on video and soon leaked to social media sites, and while Gunter admitted they might be viewed as “slightly over the top” he insisted that was not the intention.
Wales watched England’s harrowing 2-1 defeat to Iceland at their Brittany base, with the viral clip filmed the moment Roy Hodgson’s side were sent tumbling out by the tournament debutants.
"I think it may be easy to see it as being slightly over the top. But it certainly wasn't meant to come across that way.If you asked the squad as a whole, from a selfish point of view, we are ever so proud to be the last home nation team in the tournament.
"We've come such a long way and football has a funny way of bringing out emotions, as you've seen when we played them a couple of weeks ago. No one has talked about Iceland, another team who were written off before a ball was kicked and now they've reached the quarter-finals."
