90'+3 - It's all over...

Ireland's players give everything in the final quarter of an hour but don't get a single clear chance to equalise - and as the whistle goes, France celebrate making it into the quarter-finals... and keeping alive their hopes of winning a tournament on home soil, just as they did at the 1998 World Cup.

76' - Off the bar!

Andre-Pierre Gignac has a crack at goal three minutes after being brought on for France, and thunders his effort off the crossbar. That was almost it all over for France.

65' - Griezmann draws red card from Duffy

The Atletico man makes it worse! He's clipped by Shane Duffy when through on goal and flings himself into the air in theatrical fashion - the contact itself wasn't dramatised, however, and the decision is correct. It's at least only a free kick, righgt on the edge of the box.

61' - Griezmann strikes again to break Irish hearts

It's 2-1! Giroud knocks the ball down to Griezmann, who smashes home. Can Ireland respond? The did against Italy earlier in the week, but this is a huge ask now...

57' - Griezmann produces perfect header to equalise

After a couple of near-misses, Ireland succumb to a goal from Antoine Griezmann thanks to Bacary Sagna's perfect cross being met with a bullet header.

45' - France come close but Payet fluffs his lines

Just as they're looking beaten France get the ball into the box with Dimitri Payet making space to shoot - but his effort is weak, and easily blocked. Nervy moment there for Ireland, but they make it to half-time.

41' - Ireland almost make it two

Ireland still hold the upper hand, enjoying the better of the chances - and they're within a whisker of a second goal as a terrific ball is whipped into the box from a free kick by Robbie Brady, with Shane Long getting up to it brilliantly but heading just wide.

27' - Kante booked, will miss quarter-final if France make it through

Leicester City star N'Golo Kante loses the ball and goes in on Ireland's James McClean studs-up in an attempt to regain it - careless rather than malicious, but the referee reaches for his pocket to give Kante his second booking of the tournament.

2' - Brady puts Ireland ahead

Robbie Brady converts, a perfect penalty that goes in off the right-hand upright. There was no saving that one, but Hugo Lloris had gone the wrong way in any case.

1' - Pogba brings down Long in shock opening exchanges

Ireland given a penalty just as the game starts! Shane Long tangles with France midfielder Paul Pogba, with the Juventus superstar bundling the Southampton forward to the turf. The referee points to the spot!
