West Ham conceded a two-goal lead and had James Collins and Slaven Bilic sent off against FC Astra, to draw 2-2.
Enner Valencia got the first when Dimitri Payet, in an impressive performance for his new club after his summer move, crossed to the back post for Valencia to head powerfully down into the goal. Valencia left the pitch in the first half with a potentially serious leg injury.
Mauro Zarate also went close with half-time looming, bringing a wonderful save from Silviu Lung, who tipped away a curling shot from outside the box.
In the second half, Zarate made it two with an excellent solo goal, dribbling into the box and finishing delightfully.
James Collins then gave FC Astra some encouragement, getting a silly second yellow for a tug on Constantin Budescu, putting his team at risk for the last half an hour.
The Romanian side fought back and Fernando Boldrin pulled back a goal, rifling a shot from 25 yards past Adrian with a fantastic shot. West Ham couldn't hold on, and Angelo Ogbonna shinned a ball into the box over a stranded Adrian to equalise for Astra with an own goal.
Slaven Bilic added to the embarrassment for West Ham when he was sent to the stands by the referee for his own indiscipline, having said too much to the match officials.

KEY EVENTS
22' - TEIXEIRA SHOT - The ball comes into Teixeira, lurking in the post. He aims a shot for the far corner, and he hits the side netting. The closest chance of the game.
23' - GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Astra. Valencia scores - Astra don't deal with the danger of the corner, and fail to properly clear. Payet has the room for a cross, and finds Payet lurking at the back post for Valencia to power with a header down into the goal.

43' - OGBONNA HEADER - The Italian defender flicks a header from Payet's cross, and Lung manages to claw it away.
45+3' - LUNG SAVE - Lung dives to his left to stop a curling effort from Zarate from the edge of the box.
51' - GOAL! West Ham 2-0 Astra. Zarate scores - He bursts into the area, using excellent close control, skips past some challenges and then slides into a shot, to put it beneath Lung.
58' - RED CARD! Collins tugs Budescu, making a run forward, and Budescu goes down without reservation, and Collins has put his team at risk for no reason.
63' - OFF THE LINE - Oxford, now at centre-back, performs a diving header to concede a corner from a cross, and then Astra win another. Noble clears off the line after a Boldrin shoots, with West Ham risking their position.
71' - GOAL! West Ham 2-1 FC Astra. Boldrin scores - he has room for a shot from 25 yards, and fizzes in a strike against the underside of the bar.

90+2' - RED CARD! Bilic has been sent off after saying the wrong thing to the referee. Four red cards in five matches for West Ham in this tournament.
KEY STATS
Joey O'Brien's third yellow card of the tournament leaves him suspended for the return leg.
James Collins red card made it three red cards for West Ham players in five matches in the Europa League.
James Tomkins will also be suspended for the second leg of the tie.
TALKING POINT
West Ham's indiscipline could cost them more than Europa League progress. They have had four red cards in five matches, including one for their manager, in just five Europa League games this season. The Europa League qualifying rounds are something of an oddity, given that Premier League sides have little interest in them and often merely use the early stages as part of pre-season training, but if West Ham don't calm themselves down in the Premier League, suspensions will start to build up.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Reece Oxford (West Ham United): At just 16, he played with a calmness that many others older than him could not manage, especially considering he had to move from defensive midfield to central defence, in a team that was losing its way and down a man after a sending off. That he kept his composure promises a great deal for the future.
