The Croatian side exited the Europa League competition during the play-offs last season but finished third in Croatia’s top flight at the end of the year.
Nonetheless, it will be seen as a preferable draw to some other teams in the draw. As a seeded side, Everton avoided some of the more dangerous teams such as Ajax and AC Milan.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman said after the his side’s 2-0 aggregate victory over Ruzomberok at the previous qualifying stage: "This competition has always been important for me. I like to be in Europe - it's important for our experience.
"It's good for the club, the players and the fans. It's not easy to reach the group stages but we will do everything to get there.”
Elsewhere, AC Milan will face KF Shkendija, Dynamo Kiev will play Portuguese outfit CS Maritimo and Fenerbahce will play FK Vardar. Ligue 1’s Olympique Marseille will face Slovenian team NK Domzale, and Ajax will take on Norwegian club Rosenborg BK.
The first leg of the ties will take place on August 17 with the second leg following a week late on 24.
