Manchester United skipper Gary Neville has been ruled out of Saturday's FA Cup final showdown with Chelsea after failing to recover from his ankle injury.
The 32-year-old has not played since being injured in a tackle with Gary Speed in the match against Bolton Wanderers on March 17.
He had been due to resume training this week, but United have revealed that Neville's season is now over.
A statement on the club's official website read: "Gary Neville has undergone an exploratory operation on his right ankle and he will miss the FA Cup final."
Wes Brown is expected to continue to fill in at full-back in Neville's absence, although John O'Shea could also deputise.
While the news will be a blow to manager Sir Alex Ferguson, he can at least call on Serbian centre half Nemanja Vidic who has recovered from a shoulder injury.
