Paul Lambert heaps praise on Wolves after their FA Cup win at Stoke

Wolves won an FA Cup tie for the first time in six years on Saturday as they progressed to the fourth round with a 2-0 victory at the bet365 Stadium.

Well-taken goals from Helder Costa and Matt Doherty, who sealed the upset 10 minutes from time with a lovely free-kick, gave Wolves a first success in the competition since 2011 - the year that Stoke made the final under Tony Pulis.

The Championship club were indebted to goalkeeper Carl Ikeme for four fine second-half saves but they were good value for the win and the margin of victory might have been greater.

"Carl made four brilliant saves. He was outstanding. He's a big presence and a big player for us," said Lambert.

"It's brilliant when you see a young team giving everything they've got, I can't just single out one player."

Lambert made six changes to his team, two more than Stoke counterpart Mark Hughes, handing defender Mike Williamson a surprise start as he made his first appearance in 14 months - and his first for Wolves since signing permanently from Newcastle.

Midfielder Lee Evans also returned for his first game since August while attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, aged 16, made his debut when he replaced Joe Mason after 62 minutes.

Lambert said: "The pleasing thing is Mike Williamson coming back after a year out and Lee Evans came in who hasn't been fit since I've been at the club.

"Mike was superb. He was a little bit over cautious in the first half but a lot better in the second half. He's been out for 14 months and to be thrown into that environment against a Premier League team, big crowd, a derby, was monumental for him. And he was great.

"And young Morgan, a 16-year-old. He isn't here to make up the numbers, he's here because I know he can play. Morgan didn't look out of place but it's not just him. And the older lads deserve a lot of credit as well.

"Bright (Enobakhare) is getting overlooked at the minute because he's playing week in, week out, but he's been excellent.

"(Dominic) Iorfa, (Kortney) Hause, (George) Saville, Evans, they've all come in. And I think the whole performance was excellent. I thought we were great, I really did, right from the off. The whole performance from start to finish was terrific."

By contrast, Stoke boss Hughes was at a loss to explain his team's performance and said: "We got what we deserved."

"I took two off at half-time, I could have taken four or five off," said Hughes, who replaced Giannelli Imbula and Bojan Krkic with Joe Allen and Charlie Adam for the start of the second half.

"I was certainly angry (at half-time). We are a lot better than that. I picked a team that should have had enough quality to take the game away from them.

"We needed a bit more mettle in the middle of the park. We have talked until we are blue in the face about starting brightly and with intensity, which we didn't display at all first half.

"We never got up to the ball, allowed shots to come in and found ourselves behind which gave them something to hang on to and all credit to them.

"(In the) second half we did enough to win the game, but over 90 minutes we didn't."
