The Switzerland international was attempting to travel to Germany, but arrived late for his flight from Terminal 5 of the London airport and was not allowed to board the plane.
An unnamed onlooker claimed that Xhaka subsequently racially abused a member of staff in German, prompting security and police to be called.
Xhaka denies the accusations and voluntarily attended a police interview.
A statement released by the Metropolitan Police read:
Police were called at 19:29hrs on Monday, 23 January following an allegation that a member of staff had been racially abused at Heathrow Airport, Terminal Five.
The allegation was made by a third party.
Officers attended and spoke with a man in his 20s. He was not arrested. He voluntarily attended a west London police station where he was interviewed under caution.
Enquires continue.
The incident came just a day after Xhaka was sent off against Burnley – his second red card of the season.
