Greg Dyke to leave the Football Association: Q&A

Greg Dyke has announced he will not seek a new term as FA chairman.

The 68-year-old has opted out of seeking re-election. He has been FA chairman since July 2013 and as well as being a critic of FIFA under Sepp Blatter, he sought to drive through reforms in English football.

Here Press Association chief sports reporter Martyn Ziegler answers the key questions surrounding the issue.

Greg Dyke... remind me, who is he?

He's the chairman of the Football Association. You may remember he did a famous throat-cutting gesture when England were drawn in the same World Cup group as Italy and Uruguay.

Oh yes. The so-called gaffe that proved absolutely spot on. Has he said anything else noteworthy?

He said "we should shoot ourselves" if England fail to get out of their qualifying group for Euro 2016.

He sounds remarkably honest?

Probably too honest for his own good. He has made no secret that he wants to reform the FA council to have more women, more people from ethnic backgrounds, more fans' voices and younger members - hence the opposition to him from the 'blazers'.

Turkeys voting for Christmas?

Exactly.

Who will the FA appoint as his replacement?

That's the £140,000 question.

That is Dyke's annual salary (for a three-day-a-week job).

How will the history books regard Dyke's time as chairman?

Probably as the best chairman it has had. He has tried to tackle issues such as the falling number of English players in the Premier League and been a constant thorn in FIFA's side. He had many of the same views as most football fans - and was never afraid to express them.
