The 68-year-old only took over from Louis van Gaal after the 2014 World Cup, but the Dutch Football Association said in a statement on its official website that Hiddink would leave his role on July 1.
The news comes with Holland lying third in their Euro 2016 qualifying group, behind Iceland and Czech Republic- and De Boer told De Telegraaf that the Dutch FA was crazy to have re-hired the 68-year-old Hiddink from the start.
"The KNVB is just as guilty as Hiddink in this situation," De Boer.
""You noticed on day one - the friendly against Italy which Netherlands lost 2-0 - it was not working.
"I am especially sorry for Guus. I have great respect for him based on his past achievements.
"But you have to know when to stop and Hiddink clearly did not."
De Boer added that Ronald Koeman should have been given the job instead, and denied reports that Koeman hadn't been interested.
"He really wanted it," De Boer added. "Koeman was the right man."
