Two first-half Jacob Butterfield goals settled the Sky Bet Champion ship encounter and Bruce said the absence of Dawson through injury was a key factor.
Bruce said: "You're going to miss someone like Dawson on an occasion like this. For me he's been our outstanding player this season."
Bruce also felt the defeat by Derby showed just how hard it will be for his side this season who suffered a first home loss of the season.
"It's a reminder how difficult it is and Derby are easily the best team who've been here," said Bruce.
The Hull manager faced up to the prospect of his side's next game, a Capital One Cup quarter-final away to Manchester City on Tuesday.
"We've got a nice easy one to bounce back against Manchester City on Tuesday. Let's go an enjoy that. We will start working again and get back to basics again," he added.
