The U's manager handed credit to match-winner Craig Eastmond, whose 72nd minute strike sealed a "massive three points" for the Essex club.
With both sides fighting tooth and nail for their League One lives, the game itself was bereft of too many clear-cut chances. But Humes was equally delighted with keeping a clean sheet with former Glovers loan goalkeeper Sam Walker thwarting Tom Eaves on more than one occasion.
The breakthrough arrived thanks to some good wing play from George Moncur who pulled the ball back for Eastmond, who arrived late to roll it into the far corner of the net.
Humes said: "It's a massive three points. We knew it was going to be tough and physical. It was always going to be a direct game and we had to deal with the nasty side of the game which we didn't deal with against Rochdale.
"We limited it down to scraps for Yeovil and obviously I'm delighted with the three points. We needed a performance and we have shown at times that we can play and pass the ball .
"It was a great team performance. We wanted to come here to be solid and compete. We needed a result of some description whether it was 0-0 or 1-0 for the players' belief and confidence to start the Christmas period on a very positive foot.
"It's as big as any other three points; it's a win but we're not going to get carried away with it. It's important to enjoy it but we recognise there's still a lot to do."
For Yeovil, it was back down to earth with a bump having secured an FA Cup third round tie with Manchester United on Tuesday night. And manager Gary Johnson expressed his frustration at the lack of goalmouth action.
"We didn't take our opportunities, although we created three or four very, very good chances though we didn't play well," said the Glovers boss.
"It's very frustrating. We didn't do anything near enough against a team that was defensive minded. We didn't really look like winning the game and they showed a bit more quality in possession.
"We didn't look clinical all day; we didn't put anyone in there and there wasn't enough going on. Unfortunately we didn't get our game going one iota.
"We didn't create enough chances and that's why we are where we are. We haven't scored enough goals at home and it's just that quality that was not quite there as a group.
"Tom Eaves needs to get his first goal because it looks like he is losing confidence by the minute and he had two or three very good opportunities."
