Wayne Rooney edged closer to Bobby Charlton's England goals record with a well-taken double in a feisty 3-1 win over Scotland in Glasgow.
In a hugely competitive atmosphere at Celtic Park that was anything but friendly, the Manchester United striker Rooney took his international tally to 46 goals with a couple of expert finishes in the second half - Charlton is on 49 with Gary Lineker on 48.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had put the visitors ahead in the first half, with Andy Robertson pulling one back for Scotland at 2-0 in the closing minutes but England were worth their victory as they recorded a sixth straight win for the first time since the days of Sven-Goran Eriksson.
The greater depth in quality of the respective squads seemed to tell as Scotland missed the class of the injured Sunderland forward Steven Fletcher up front.
Chris Martin replaced Fletcher as Gordon Strachan opted for the same squad who had completed a 1-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over the Republic of Ireland on Friday, but Scotland seemed sluggish as they produced arguably their worst performance under Strachan.

83' GOAL! Scotland 1-2 England: Robertson with the finish from the Russell pass. A brilliant move from Scotland. They are back to 2-1 behind.
85' GOAL! Scotland 1-3 England: Rooney with the finish from the Lallana cross. Great cutback, and the finish is there from the Manchester United forward.

Opta
MAN OF THE MATCH
Wayne Rooney (England): Brilliant performance from the Manchester United forward. A couple of fine finishes, but his appetite was outstanding too.
TALKING POINT
How good were England? England were well up for this match. Who knows why, but they produced a performance of real hunger and professionalism. Scotland were not great. They looked a bit jaded physically and mentally after the win over Ireland, but that should not detract from the eagerness of England to impress. Rooney epitomised all that was good about England.
