Holders Al Ahly beat South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 to record a 4-2 aggregate victory and proceed to the group phase of the African Champions League. The Egyptian team were joined in the last eight by JS Kabylie of Algeria and Sudan's Al Hilal.
Al Ahly captain Shady Mohamed converted a penalty and playmaker Mohamed Aboutrika signalled his return from injury with a breakaway goal in a third round second leg tie at the Cairo International Stadium watched by an estimated crowd of 30,000.
The home team opened the scoring in the 69th minute when Sundowns defender Benson Mhlongo conceded a penalty with a reckless challenge. Aboutrika, voted the best player of last year's competition, made it 2-0 in the 81st minute with a deft chip over the goalkeeper.
Al Hilal thumped Nigerians Nasarawa United 3-0 to draw 3-3 on aggregate before advancing 3-2 on penalties. Mozambique defender Dario Khan and Nigerian import Kelechi Osunwa gave the Sudanese champions a 2-0 lead and a late third from Seif Masawi levelled the aggregate scores.
In Algiers, a stoppage-time winner from substitute Nassim Hamlaoui gave JS Kabylie a berth in the group phase for the second successive year after a 2-0 victory (aggregate 2-1) over Coton Sport of Cameroon.
The Algerians overcame a lethargic first-half performance to level the aggregate scores with a goal in the 59th minute from Mali import Cheikh Oumar Dabo, his fourth of the tournament.
Five more Champions League matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
