Irish footballer Cyrus Christie has spoken out over racist abuse sent to him on social media following Ireland's failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
In a message posted on Twitter, Christie was keen to praise the fans, saying:
"I genuinely believe our fans are some of the best in world."
He then went on to describe the abuse sent to him:
"However, there have been a number of racist comments which have been brought to my attention during the World Cup qualifying campaign over the last couple of months and most recently last week.
"These comments are not representative of our fans or our sport.
"It is deeply saddening thatracism is still part of the game we all enjoy and love. I strongly believe we need to stand up against these individuals who do not belong in football or any other sport."
Ireland reached the play-off stage of the qualifying process for the World Cup, losing 5-1 on aggregate after a 5-1 defeat at home in their second leg last Tuesday.
