John Still fumes at 'shocking' defending as Luton throw it away against Carlisle

Once Danny Green had given Luton a two-goal cushion just before the hour, it looked like Hatters would be home and dry only for goals from Alex Gilliead, Jabo Ibehre and Derek Asamoah to win it for the Cumbrians.

Still said: "I thought we were shocking defensively, good going forward, but I thought both halves we were very poor defensively.

"If there is one area we work our socks off it's defending, but they're my players, I signed them, I coach them, so it's my responsibility.

"One goal we had three players on the floor in the box, it was absolutely shocking. We scored three goals at home, that should be enough, but it wasn't."

Carlisle manager Keith Curle saw his side endure struggles of their own but was pleased with the way they located Luton's weak spot and exploited it.

"We had a game-plan, but in the first two or three minutes of the first half we went a goal down," he said.

"We climbed the mountain to get it back to 1-1 and I thought in the latter stages of the first half we were the dominant side.

"We worked out, it was quite simple, quite basic, every time Michael Raynes went in the box, he caused havoc. All we needed to do was put quality balls in there, gamble off him and we sussed out a weakness straight through the heart of their defence as they looked jittery and nervous and it paid off."

Jack Marriott had put Luton ahead five minutes in but Charlie Wyke levelled on the stroke of half-time.

Josh McQuoid restored Luton's lead before Green got the third, but there would be a sting in the tail for the hosts.
