Newcastle United are set to make an ambitious swoop for Barcelona's Brazilian World Cup-winner Edmilson. The 29-year-old utility defensive player is believed to have agreed in principle on a move to St James's Park.
According to the Catalan Sport newspaper, representatives from the Tyneside club are due in Barcelona on Friday for further discussions over a 'Bosman' free transfer.
The former Lyon player arrived at the Camp Nou in 2004, where he helped Barcelona win back-to-back Liga titles.
However, he has failed to win a new contract after in injury-blighted campaign in which Frank Rijkaard's side lost their title to Real Madrid and ended the season trophyless.
Edmilson holds an Italian passport, and therefore will not require a work permit to play in the Premiership.
If the signing goes through, it will be typical of the ambitious moves that Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce has made throughout his career.
While at Bolton, he secured the high-profile acquisitions of players such as Jay-Jay Okocha, Youri Djorkaeff, Nicolas Anelka and - albeit less successfully - Edmilson's compatriot Mario Jardel.
