Everton needed extra time to beat Barnsley 5-3 in the League Cup second round.
Adam Davies pulled off a vital double save in the early stages of the match, and Barnsley took the lead when Sam Winnall reacted quickly to a loose ball in the box to shoot into the bottom corner.
Barnsley made it two when Marley Watkins seized on John Stones' error, who was playing despite earlier handing in a transfer request, to poke in at the back post.
In the second half, Everton quickly pulled a goal back with a smart volley in the box from Kevin Mirallas. They equalised on 59 minutes from Steven Naismith's glancing header and appeared to be the team most likely to score the winner.
However, Dan Crowley put Barnsley ahead a minute later when Reece Wabara's fizzed cross from the right was clipped calmly past Joel Robles in the Everton goal. Gerard Deulofeu picked out Romelul Lukaku at the near post for him to scuff in an equaliser.
Six minutes into the first half of extra time, Lukaku pressured Marc Roberts into putting the ball into his own net from Deulofeu's pass. Conor Hourihane sent a shot curling against the woodwork from 35 yards out, but Lukaku grabbed another to settle the tie.

KEY STATS
Everton have spent the least money in the Premier League this summer.
Barnsley scored with their only two shots on target in the first half.
TALKING POINT
Was it the right decision to play John Stones? Admittedly, Everton were short on bodies in defence going into the match, and not many players in a similar position would have played having handed in a transfer request, but hindsight suggests an alternative might have been better.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Romelu Lukaku (Everton): He started slowly, as did the rest of the Everton side, but as Barnsley tired and the away side created more with the space given to them, he gave Everton a focus to play the ball into, and also offered reliable finishing to almost claim a hat-trick.
