Everton paid a club record £28m fee to sign Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea in 2014, but he is beginning to look a real bargain after a 12th goal in 12 games sealed his side's 2-1 win over Manchester City in the League Cup semi-final first leg at Goodison Park.

Lukaku winner sets up prospect of all-Merseyside final

Everton and Liverpool could meet in a first final at Wembley in 27 years. They last contested a major final in 1989 when Liverpool completed a 3-2 win in the FA Cup final. Both Merseyside clubs hold slender leads after their respective League Cup semi-final first legs with Lukaku's headed winner sealing Everton's 2-1 success against City and Liverpool winning 1-0 at Stoke on Tuesday night.
Lukaku could miss Everton's match with Dagenham and Redbridge in the FA Cup third round on Saturday due to an ankle injury, but may feature in the trip to City in the League next Wednesday. The return leg with City is on January 27 at Etihad Stadium.

What the newspapers said about Lukaku

Everton manager Roberto Martinez thrilled with Lukaku

The stats are there to back any assessment of Lukaku, from our point of view he has always been the perfect striker for our football club. He is a young boy, he wants to be the best in the world.

Our View

It is difficult to disagree with Martinez's assertion that Lukaku is already one of the world's most promising forwards. His returns at the age of only 22 are quite remarkable, and there is a high possibility that we have yet to see the best of him. For instance, the stats suggests he could be better in retaining possession from tackles, but these are only minor flaws that can and will be ironed out by a good coach. Chelsea agreed when they purchased him from Anderlecht for around £17m in 2011, but one has to question the wisdom of Jose Mourinho in agreeing to flog him for £10m more three years later. Especially when one compares his movement to Diego Costa. His 19 goals in all competitions are more than any Premier League forward so far this season.
If Lukaku continues on such an upward trend with Everton and probably his country at Euro 2016, he is destined to perform at a higher level than the Toffees, who should be rewarded handsomely if and when they decide to sell their most potent asset.
