Daniel Sturridge scored a brace to send Liverpool into the quarter-finals despite a late penalty from Vincent Janssen.
The England striker was left out of the starting XI for the weekend's 2-1 victory over West Brom and he was encouraged by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp to use this game to showcase his credentials.
He did that to great effect, opening the scoring with an instinctive finish when Marko Grujic's shot had been deflected into his path before calmly slotting home through one-on-one.

Substitute Erik Lamela won a penalty late on, which Janssen converted, and then set-up youngster Shayon Harrison for a glorious chance to equalise but the debutant's touch let him down at the crucial moment.
Both sides made mass changes from their weekend matches as they looked to balance their hectic schedules.

TALKING POINT

Should Daniel Sturridge be starting in the Premier League? Sturridge is clearly a massive headache at the moment for Jurgen Klopp. Sturridge is evidently a talented player but he seemed to slow down Liverpool's play against Manchester United last Monday and they looked brighter when he came off. Against West Brom, Roberto Firmino led the line and the Brazilian seems to play better when Sturridge isn't on the pitch. He's over a year into the job and Klopp still hasn't figured a way to get one of his best players into his best starting XI. Philippe Coutinho and Firmino are must picks at the moment while Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane are also important, so it's hard to see where Sturridge fits in.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Michel Vorm (Spurs): This was a tricky one, as there were so many players that could have been selected. Sturridge could have taken it but in reality he should have scored at least three more but for poor finishing. Divock Origi and Trent Alexander-Arnold were both bright when given a chance whilst Georginio Wijnaldum and captain Lucas showed their experience. However the number of Liverpool players who performed well only went to highlight how supreme Vorm was in the Tottenham goal. The two-goal deficit could have been far more without him.

KEY MOMENTS

9' - GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Spurs. Grujic gets forward well but his shot easily blocked. However the shot falls right into the path of Sturridge who gambles and lifts the ball over Michel Vorm.
11' - SAVE! I tell you what if Sturridge is sulking tonight about being lift out of the starting XI on the weekend he's not showing it. He picks the ball up on the right and cuts inside before unleashing a shot that's curling towards the far corner. This time Vorm is able to make a save.
18' - WHAT A MISS! Oh Daniel Sturridge that is so, so poor. Origi does so well, fighting for a ball on the byline before battling his way through four players with strength and pace. He somehow squeezes the ball to Sturridge who is unmarked in the box but he takes it first time with his right and goes straight at Vorm.

53' - CHANCE! Terrific ball in behind the full-backs sets Origi away and he plays the ball across the box without looking. It finds Sturridge at the back post but he's put off by two defenders and fluffs his lines.
59' - WHAT A SAVE! Origi picks up the ball on the left and drifts inside where he unleashes a fierce shot towards the top corner. Vorm hurls himself to his right to tip it over.
64' - GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Spurs. Wonderful goal from Liverpool as Wijnaldum plays the perfect through ball to Sturridge first time. He keeps his cool and slots the ball through the legs of Vorm.
76' - GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 Spurs. Lamela is fouled in the box by Klavan and it is Janssen who steps up. He sends Mignolet the wrong way with a powerful penalty.

81' - SAVE! That looks like it could be an incredible save. Sturridge holds the ball in the box before trying a dink with his left foot. It takes a deflection off Carter-Vickers which forces Vorm to readjust wonderfully and tip it onto the bar.
87' - Two great chances. First for Harrison after he fails to properly control an ball from Lamela and then from Sturridge as he cuts inside and fires it low at Vorm.
