Sunderland manager David Moyes has been fined £8,000 and banned for one match after being sent off during last week's League Cup defeat at Southampton.
Moyes watched his side lose 1-0 in the last 16 of the tournament and will serve the touchline ban for using industrial language.
Moyes was unhappy when Sunderland were denied a penalty after Victor Anichebe appeared to be fouled by Maya Yoshida late on, and admitted swearing at the fourth official James Addock.
“David Moyes will serve an immediate one-match touchline ban after he admitted using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official and accepted the standard penalty,” read a statement on the FA’s website.
“The incident happened in or around the 90th minute of Sunderland’s EFL Cup fixture at Southampton on 26 October 2016.
“As well as the suspension, the standard penalty for this breach of FA Rule E3 also includes an £8,000 fine.”
Moyes, 53, has yet to win a Premier League match as Sunderland manager.
A 4-1 home loss to Arsenal on Saturday condemned the club to their worst ever start to a season in England's top fight.
Sunderland are bottom of the table with only two points after 10 games, and are already facing a long fight to avoid relegation to the Championship.
Sunderland travel to Bournemouth on Saturday seeking their first win of the season against Eddie Howe's team, who are 10th after their opening 10 games of the campaign.
