Gary Caldwell adamant Wigan will remain professional against Barnsley

Their 4-0 victory over Blackpool all but confirmed them as League One champions and sealed a return to the Championship.

Four goals in the second half at Bloomfield Road saw Blackpool totally overrun, pushing the Seasiders closer to a second straight relegation.

Chris McCann, Yanic Wildschut (2) and Will Grigg scored to ensure an emphatic victory to tee up party time for the Latics.

"We are champions now in all but the 'C' next to our name but we'll be professional next week," said Caldwell.

"We want to get as many points as we can. We will enjoy tonight obviously and then we'll look forward to a massive party next Sunday back at the DW.

"It's not just for me it's for the whole club and I work for them to try and bring success. It means more as a manager because you appreciate how many people it affects.

"I understand the whole club as manager so I'll enjoy it but know that it's my responsibility to think about next season and try to take this club forward.

"The players understood the process we had to go through. There was a lot of learning but as the season progressed we were excellent and I still believe we can get better, I still believe next year we will be competitive in a very difficult league.

"This is only the beginning for Wigan."

McCann opened the scoring on the hour mark, sending a rising drive past Colin Doyle from 18 yards.

Wildschut curled into the far corner to make it 2-0, securing the win with a low drive as Blackpool capitulated.

Grigg's header from a Max Power cross made it a miserable day for Seasiders boss Neil McDonald, who said: "You have to score when you're on top especially when you play the top teams, the chances that we created in the first half were really good ones and we should have taken them.

"In the end, by not taking them we've been heavily punished because Wigan showed that when the chance comes along they put it in the back of the net and that's why they're top of the league.

"We told the players to do the same as we did first half, we played really well, got into them and stopped them from having movement and chances.

"We couldn't keep that going and it was a poor performance second half especially after they scored the first goal and they punished us.

"It's not looking good but until that time comes we live with the little bit of hope. We try to lift the players because they're devastated. We've got one game left if we still have a chance of staying in the league then we give it all we've got."

Millwall moved into third with a 3-0 home win over Oldham, while Barnsley stayed slotted in the final play-off place despite relegated Colchester holding them to a 2-2 draw.

Peterborough finished on top in a topsy-turvy game at Shrewsbury, who came back from 3-0 down to go into the last minute level - but Jon Taylor's last-gasp strike secured the points for the visitors.

Promotion hopefuls Bradford beat mid-table Southend by a single Lee Evans goal, while Rochdale slipped down the table after a 2-2 home draw against Swindon Town.

Second-placed Burton Albion beat Gillingham 2-1, still in with a shout of sneaking into the play-off slots, leaving it late for Tom Naylor's winner.

Chesterfield managed a resounding 3-0 win over Bury with goals from Jay O'Shea, Lee Novak and Dan Gardner.

Coventry's two early goals left Sheffield United stunned, and although Billy Sharp got one back just before the hour mark, Ruben Lameiras restored the advantage in the 87th minute.

Scunthorpe sit just outside the play-offs after beating Port Vale thanks to Paddy Madden's 61st-minute goal.

And the relegation zone clash between Crewe and Doncaster Rovers ended with a surprisingly comprehensive win for the league's bottom side, coming back from a Tommy Rowe goal down to win 3-1.
