Espanyol and Celta Vigo played out a 1-1 draw at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat.
Ex-Liverpool striker Iago Aspas put the away side ahead on the 28th minute, but just before half-time Marco Asensio's long range equaliser ensured the points would be shared.
Celta Vigo are now six points behind Villarreal in fourth, who have a game in hand as they chase European qualification. Espanyol have 37 points, eight clear of Sporting Gijon in 18th place.
In the other Liga game on Tuesday night, Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored the only goal of the game between Real Betis and Las Palmas, who were down to 10 men when Aythami Artiles was sent off in the first half.
Betis' 1-0 victoy means they are now one point ahead of Las Palmas, with 41 points, and they sit in 11th position.
