Lionel Messi had a penalty for his 300th La Liga goal but passed for Luis Suarez to score to make it 4-1 against Celta Vigo on Sunday night.
Barcelona succeeded where Thierry Henry and Robert Pires failed against Manchester City in 2005 as Messi rolled the ball off the spot to Suarez, who slotted the ball home for his hat-trick.
Celta coach Eduardo Berizzo took the penalty in good spirit.
The most famous of this kind of penalty came when Johan Cruyff passed to Jesper Olsen from the spot for Ajax against Helmond Sport in 1982. Olsen passed back for Cruyff to score.
But the first came in 1957, through Belgium's Rik Coppens and Andre Piters against Iceland.
Messi would have brought up his triple-century in La Liga had he scored. But he did open the scoring for Barca with a sensational free-kick and also teed up Suarez for his first with a quite brilliant pass.
Neymar was the provider for Suarez's second with another astonishing piece of skill. He also flicked the ball over a defender's head with his legs as Barca turned on the style.
And Ivan Rakitic and Neymar wrapped up the scoring to make it 6-1 on the night.
"They always try things, and today it came off well," said Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba after the match of Messi's moment of magic.
