Madrid’s game at Balaidos was called off on Sunday morning, hours before the tie was to be played, over safety concerns after Friday saw heavy storms in the Vigo region.
Perez is said to be unhappy that repair work to Celta’s ground wasn’t carried out in the time between the storms and Sunday morning, or that the game wasn’t authorised to go ahead with the area of the stadium concerned closed off. Madrid also hoped the game could be played elsewhere on Sunday.
The feeling at Santiago Bernabeu is that not all possibilities were exhausted before the postponement and out of frustration, Perez has revived the idea of a European Super League, based on the International Champions Cup, a pre-season tournament.
Os Celestes also believe the players would have been at risk as well as the roof tiles that were uprooted in the storm landed on the pitch, and a repeat during the game could have had serious consequences.
The Vigo storms continued on Sunday evening, AS notes, and Balaidos was damaged further, while repair work has yet to begin in A Coruna, Friday’s Deportivo-Real Betis game having been called off as well.
