A mighty defensive effort earned Leganes a draw in their first ever La Liga home game, restricting the mighty Atletico Madrid to very few chances and shots. They now sit above their visitors in the table, who have drawn with promoted sides in each of their two fixtures so far this season.
But, unlike in last week's home encounter with Alaves, where a variety of chances were created and then missed, this time Atleti were smothered by a massed and well-drilled defence. In the first half, Kevin Gameiro shot wide from an acute angle, and Antoine Griezmann had a volley of textbook technique saved by Jon Ander Serantes, but otherwise, Leganes endured few scares.
And similar was so in the second half; Atleti's movement and passing were nowhere near sharp enough. Gameiro shot straight at Serantes, again from an acute angle, Griezmann flipped an effort wide, and Yannick Carrasco drilled straight at the keeper. Then, in injury time, Filipe Luis crosses beautifully for Fernando Torres, who was unmarked in the box. He arrived onto the ball perfectly, but couldn't quite direct it into the far corner, instead picking out the keeper. It secured a memorable night for Madrid's fourth team.

TALKING POINT

Why were Atleti so cautious? Diego Simeone hasn't got this far without the confidence of his convictions, but it was odd that it took him so long to bring on Fernando Torres and Yannick Carrasco when his team so clearly needed bodies in the box and pace out wide. But he stuck with two holding midfielders for no apparent reason, and paid the price.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Jon Ander Serantes (Leganes). None of his saves were breathtaking, but he did everything asked of him with extreme confidence and competence.

PLAYER RATINGS

Leganes: Serantes 8, Bustinza 7, Matovani 7, Victor Diaz 7, Diego Rico 7, Ruben Perez 7, Alberto Marin 6, Gabriel 6, Unia Lopez 6, Szymanowski 5, Guerrero 6. Subs: Marin 6, Insua 6, Darwin Nachos 6.
Atletico Madrid: Oblak 6, Juanfran 7, Savic 6, Godin 6, Filipe Luis 7, Koke 6, Augusto 5, Gabi 6, Saul 5, Gameiro 6, Griezmann 6. Subs: Torres 5, Carrasco 7, Gaitan 7.

KEY MOMENTS

20' CHANCE! Lovely from Griezmann, who sucks in Ruben Perez, then flicks the ball between his legs, collects it around the side of him, and knocks off a pass. Nothing comes of it, but it was beautiful all the same.

26' CHANCE! Matovani inserts himself between Gameiro and Koke on the left of his box, dithers, and they rob him, playing a lovely one-two in remarkably close proximity, Kokoe flicking Gameiro in. There's no one between him and goal, but the angle is very acute, so he does his best to look for the far corner but ends up dragging a shot that almost goes out for a corner.

34’ BRILLIANT! Magnificent defending from Diego RIco! Saul finds space on the left and crosses, and as the ball drops to Griezmann, he hurls himself in his entirety at a shot that is laced with serious power.

38' SAVE! Gabi, 35 yards out and more or less central, pings a lovely ball over the top to Griezmann, pulling off the last man on the left of the box. He watches it onto his laces and nails the volley as you'd expect, but Serantes does well to beat away. That's his first save of the night.

52' CHANCE! First little flash of Gameiro, who pulls left and darts between Bustinza and Victor Diaz, who really should do more; should at least do something. But they don't and he's in on goal, but simply thrashes the ball as hard as he can instead of placing it where Serantes can't reach, and as a consequence sees his shot beaten away at the near post.

76' CHANCE! Nice from Carrasco, who dashes outside two men down the left - that's one way of eliminating a massed defence - and whips back a cross for Griezmann, who tries a whip of his own, to finish. But it's with his right foot, and the shot goes well wide.

82' SAVE! This looks like it's it! Giatan floats a delectable pass over the top from centre to left, finding Carrasco. He's wider than he'd like, but he absolutely panels his shot ... only for Serantes to stand strong and block! He's been brilliant tonight.

90+1' - WHAT A MISS FERNANDO TORRES! Filipe Luis strides down the left again, swirls over a cross, and Torres arrives perfect to head - his body shape is perfect, he's going to flick it into the far corner, except gets too much on it and it's straight at Serantes.
